Original description
Coprinus austrofriesii Redhead & Pegler in Redhead & Traquair in Mycotaxon 13: 392. 1981 (Coprinus sect. herbicolae from Canada, notes on extraliminal taxa, and the taxonomic position of a low temperature basidiomycete forage crop pathogen from western Canada). Holotype: Venezuela: Miranda, Edo, Los Palos Grandes (Caracas), on dead grasses on lawn, 11 July 1958, R.W.G. Dennis 1495 (K).

Differt a Coprino friesio sporis ovoideis 9.6 - 11.8 x 7.2 - 8 x 7 - 9 µm.
Holotypus: in graminis, Iulio 11, 1958, Los Palos Grandes (Caracas) Edo, Miranda, Venezuela, leg. R.W.G. Dennis 1495 (K).

Coprinus austrofriesii was reported from Venezuela as C. friesii by Dennis (1961: 120). Dennis evidently noted a difference between his collection and European materials as he suspected it would be segregated at the species level in tine. It differs from C. friesii by the much larger spores. In other respects it resembles C. friesii. This is an important difference when compared to the consistency shown between European and North American collections of C. friesii.

Observations:
Spores [20,1,1] 9.2--12.3 x 7.5--9.7 µm, dark red-brown, ovoid or ellipsoid, not distinctly lentiform; Q= 1.15--1.35, av. Q= 1.25; av. L= 11.0, av. B= 8.9 µm. Germ pore central, c. 2 µm in diameter. Basidia 22--28 x 10--12 µm, 4-spored, surrounded by (5--)6--8(--9) pseudoparaphyses. Pleurocystidia 90--120 x 15--25 µm. Cheilocystidia not found. Veil rather thin, up to 5 µm wide, medium thick-walled; thickness walls up to c. 1.5 µm and pale yellow-brown. Clamp-connections present.

Notes: in the description only the sizes of the spores are noted by Redhead & Pegler as being 9.6--11.8 x 7--9 x 7.2--8 µm.
