Notes: Karsten described Coprinus phaeosporus as a new species first in 1881 and again in 1882 (this time not in Latin). In 1881 August was given as the month of collecting, the substrate as soil but also decaying grasses ('terra hortorum nec non graminibus putrescentibus'). In the second publication Karsten (1882: 236) noted the species on decaying grasses in the months of July and August. Probably material was collected over a few weeks. We are not sure whether the holotype represents the first or the second of these collections.
