Original description
Coprinus vermiculifer Joss. ex Dennis in Kew Bull. 19: 112. 1964 (The fungi of the Isle of Rhum). - (Coprinus vermiculifer Josserand in Bull. Soc. mycol. Fr. 60: 5-9. 1944 (invalid, no Latin descr.). Holotype: Scotland: Isle of Rhum: Sgor Mhor, on deer droppings, 1 Sept. 1962 (K)).

Pileo 6 x 4 mm., campanulato, demum in margine sulcato et reflexo, ad 10 mm. lato, candida, dein cinerescente, flbrilloso-villoso, deliquescente. Stipite 30 x 1 mm., candido, subtiliter villoso. Lamellis confertis, primum albis, deinde nigris, acie albido pruinosa. Basidiosporis 9-10 x 5.5 µm, ellipsoideis, sub microscope opacis, poro angusto. Basidiis tetrasporis, 9 u latis. Cystidiis in lateribus lamellarum oblongis, 45 x 25 µm., in acie plerisque clavatis. Vestimento pilei ex hyphis tenuibus, 4-7.5 µm latis, hyalinis vel paulum brunneis, fibulatis, pariete incrassati.

Observations:
Spores [60/2/1] 8.5-12.5 x 6-8 µm, dark red-brown, ellipsoid or ovoid; Q= 1.35-1.75, av. Q= 1.50-1.60; av. L= 10.3-11.3, av. B= 6.8-7.0 µm. Germ pore central, c. 1.5 µm in diameter. Basidia 14-28 x 9-10 µm, 4-spored, surrounded by (3-)4-5(-6) pseudoparaphyses. Pleurocystidia 60-90 x 25-28 µm, ellipsoid, (sub)cylindric. Cheilocystidia 35-55 x 20-32 µm, ellipsoid or (sub)globose. Veil thick-walled, strongly branched, diverculate with ascending endcells, 3-9 µm wide, walls up to 1.5(-2.5) µm thick. Clamp-connections present.
