Original description
Coprinus xantholepis P.D. Orton in Notes R. bot. Gdn Edinb. 32: 150. 1972 (Notes on British agarics IV). Holotype: Scotland: Aberdeenshire, Loch Skene, 19 Aug. 1964, P.D. Orton 2567 (holotype, E).

Observations:
Spores [20,1,1] 5.2--7.0 x 4.5--6.1 µm, medium red-brown, ovoid or ellipsoid; Q= 1.10--1.25, av. Q= 1.15; av. L= 6.3, av. B= 5.4 µm. Germ pore central, c. 1.3 µm in diameter. Basidia 18--35 x 8.5--11 µm, 4-spored, surrounded by (3--)4--6(--7) pseudoparaphyses. Pleurocystidia 80--140 x 20--40 µm. Cheilocystidia 60--120 x 16--30 µm. Veil 3--7 µm wide, slightly thick-walled, walls up to 1 µm, pale yellowish. Clamp-connections present.
