The most popular of the DC "weird" series, House of Mystery
had already quite a history when the contents turned weird. It started out
as a rather tame horror series in 1952, only two short years before the
Comics Code was introduced. In the sixties, the focus turned towards super-heroes,
with Manhunter from Mars (known to most of us as J'onn J'onzz
the Martian Manhunter. Later, the series went from bad to worse when
the series starred Robby Reed, with his Dial 'H' for Hero
run.
Untimately, with #174, the series returned to showcase weird stories. #176
introduced Cain, the malevolent caretaker of the House, who would
reign supreme, despite usurpers such as the Spectre (#225) and the
I, Vampire feature (#295-321).
Run: #174 (??)-#321 (October 1983).
